F-Gas Services
Fluorinated gases (F-Gases) are potent, man-made gases that linger in the atmosphere and contribute to the greenhouse effect.
The most common F-Gas, HFCs (Hydrofluorocarbons), are found in various applications, including commercial and industrial refrigeration, air conditioning systems, and heat pump equipment. In 2006, the European Union introduced F-Gas regulations to mitigate the global warming effects of these gases. These regulations were further revised in 2014, imposing additional obligations on both contractors and operators.

The frequency of leak checks depends on the amount of F gas in the equipment and its global warming potential (GWP) or CO2 equivalent.
- At least once every 12 months for a CO2 equivalent in tonnes of 5 to 50
- At least once every 6 months for a CO2 equivalent in tonnes of 50 to 500
- At least every 3 months for a CO2 equivalent in tonnes of 500 or more This schedule ensures compliance with F-Gas regulations and helps to minimise environmental impact.
Upon discovering a leak, immediate repairs are necessary, followed by a repeat leak test within 30 days to verify the effectiveness of the repair. All engineers conducting leak tests and repairs must hold an F-Gas handling certificate and work for an F-Gas certified company.
‘Operators’ must ensure records are kept for at least 5 years for all equipment that requires a leak test (i.e. those above the 5 tonnes CO2 equivalent).
These records should include:
- The quantity and type of F-Gas installed.
- The quantity of F-Gas added during installation, maintenance or when repairing a leak.
- Details of whether the F-Gas has been recycled or reclaimed.
- Quantity of any F-Gas recovered.
- Details of those responsible for installing/servicing or decommissioning the equipment.
- Details of all leak checks undertaken.
- Details of the recovery and disposal of the F-Gas should the equipment be decommissioned.
Adhering to best practices in leak testing and repairs can significantly reduce refrigerant losses, benefiting both the environment and the performance of the system.
